Seira Crochet Wall Lamp: A Tribute to Portuguese Heritage

The Rope Crochet Wall Lamp – Seira combines traditional craftsmanship with cultural heritage, offering a unique piece that reflects the rich history of Northern Portugal. Crafted from sisal using crochet techniques, this lamp is more than just a lighting fixture; it’s a symbol of Portugal’s deep-rooted traditions.

The Technique and Material: Sisal and Crochet

Sisal, a durable natural fiber derived from the Agave sisalana plant, is widely recognized for its strength and versatility. It has been historically used in Portugal for various purposes, from packaging and farm work to essential roles in the fishing industry. Sisal’s robust nature makes it ideal for creating rope, nets, and mats, which have been vital to Portuguese communities for generations.

Crochet, the technique used in crafting this wall lamp, involves intricate handwork, where the sisal is meticulously looped and intertwined to form beautiful, textured patterns. The roughness of the sisal fiber is softened by the crochet process, resulting in a delicate yet durable piece that maintains its rustic charm.

A Nod to Olive Oil Production

The design of this wall lamp is inspired by the traditional “seiras” or “capachos” used in the ancient process of olive oil production. In old mills, olives were placed on top of these sisal mats before being pressed to extract the oil. The mats, woven from the same tough and fibrous sisal, were integral to this labor-intensive process. These presses, once commonplace in Northern Portugal, are now rare, making this lamp a poignant tribute to a fading craft.

Honoring a Disappearing Tradition

In Northern Portugal, like in many other regions, these traditional olive mills are vanishing, replaced by modern techniques and machinery. By bringing the shape of the “seira” into this wall lamp, the essence of this craft is preserved in a new, artistic form. The lamp’s circular design mimics the concentric patterns of the old mats, transforming an everyday item into a piece of history.

The Seira Crochet Wall Lamp is not just a light source but a story, a way to keep alive the memory of those who worked the olive presses and wove the sisal mats by hand. Each lamp is a blend of rustic texture and contemporary design, serving as a timeless reminder of the Portuguese legacy in craftsmanship.

This lamp stands as both a functional object and a piece of art, bridging past and present through the enduring beauty of sisal and the time-honored tradition of crochet.
